Get the top four questions to ask your child’s teacher about reading assessments, support, and progress. Expert guidance from Sprout Labs for a confident school year.

Reading is a top priority for so many families as their children move through elementary school. This time of year, it's common for parents to tell us "I want to talk to my child's new teacher about reading, but I'm not sure what to ask."

We asked our Reading Specilaists for advice, and here's what they had to say.

"This is a great question! Teachers appreciate when parents partner to help their child make the most of the school year.

Here are 4 simple questions you can bring to your teacher meet and great this fall, or email to them if you can't make it in person."

1. What reading assessments will my child take this year, and will I see the results?

Over 40 states have passed laws that require students in kindergarten through second-grade to be screened at the beginning of the school year for reading difficulties. Your teacher can tell you how your school is addressing this requirement and how results will be communicated to you.

2. What’s the school’s approach to teaching reading? Is there a curriculum I can learn more about?
There’s a positive movement towards teaching the Science of Reading which benefits all kids, especially those with reading challenges or dyslexia risk

3. What’s the most helpful thing I can do at home to support reading progress?

If you have a hunch that your child needs more reading support, considering ways to help outside of the classroom can really help.

4. If my child isn’t meeting reading benchmarks, how will I be informed?

Early intervention is the most effective, so knowing that the teacher will bring any causes for concern to your attention can give you some peace of mind as the school year gets underway.
